Assignment 6; Edited

I edited my assignment 6 photos to make them look like magazine covers. The concept behind it is still the same; I wanted to portray the fragmented self-identity in that our identities are really multi-faceted and not uni-dimensional. The problem however, with the 'construction of reality' is that we often see everything in categories; if a person is a convict, he/she is a bad person through and through. Or if a person is a humanitarian, he/she is a good person through and through. Not true!

And of course, this 'constructed reality' wouldn't be possible without the media. Here, I took media in its literal form of magazines but I wish to explain that media includes all forms of representation e.g. languages, sounds, music, videos, etc. This construction of our reality is flawed as argued in my assignment 4 on Surrealism in that it is not able to capture the full essence of our existence. And hence, I used the magazine covers to illustrate this mediation.

I will also encourage my viewers to think further about how we often 'judge a book by its cover' and stereotype i.e. essentialize what we see as the most definitive of a character. I implore my viewers to see beyond such narrow framings and experience the fullness of an identity.
